Justice Hrishikesh Roy had a tenure of 5.33 years at the Supreme Court

Justice Roy’s tenure was longer than the average tenure of judges at the top court

On 31 January 2025, Justice Hrishikesh Roy retired from the Supreme Court of India. He was among the 4 judges that were recommended and elevated to the top court during former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi’s tenure.

His retirement has reduced the sitting strength of the Supreme Court to 32 judges.

Justice Roy was appointed alongside Justices Krishna Murari, S. Ravindra Bhat, and V. Ramasubramaniam. Within this group, Justice Roy’s tenure is the longest, after Justice Bhat, who retired in October 2023.

Among the sitting judges, Justice J.B. Pardiwala will serve the longest tenure of 8.25 years.
