Justice C.T. Ravikumar had a tenure of 3.25 years at the Supreme Court
Justice Ravikumar's three-year long tenure was shorter than the average tenure of the sitting judges in the top court
On 5 January 2024, Justice C.T. Ravikumar retired from the Supreme Court of India. He was among the 11 judges that were recommended and elevated to the top court during former Chief Justice N.V. Ramana’s tenure.
His retirement has reduced the sitting strength of the Supreme Court to 32 judges.
Figure 1 plots the expected tenure of all sitting judges of the Supreme Court. The average tenure of the current sitting judges at the Supreme Court is 5.08 years. Justice Ravikumar’s tenure fell short of this average.
Justice Ravikumar was appointed alongside Justices A.S. Oka, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, Kohli, B.V. Nagarathna, M.M. Sundresh, Bela Trivedi and P.S. Narasimha. Within this group, Justice Ravikumar's tenure is the shortest, after Justice Kohli, who retired in September last year.
Justice Narasimha will serve the longest tenure among this cohort—6.75 years. He is also in line to be the Chief Justice of India in 2027.
Among the sitting judges, Justice J.B. Pardiwala will serve the longest tenure of 8.25 years.
