Sexual Harassment & the CJIApril 23rd 2019
A new Bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, Rohinton Nariman, and Deepak Gupta is hearing the case pertaining to the sexual harassment allegations against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. In particular, it is assessing whether they are fabricated allegations, intended to curtail the independence of the judiciary.
Today, the Supreme Court issued notice to the lawyer Utsav Bains to appear in-person in Court tomorrow. Utsav Bains alleges he was personally approached to take part in a conspiracy to the frame the Chief Justice.
In the first hearing, the Chief Justice had yet to recuse himself from the Bench. He vehemently denied the allegations. Justices Arun Mishra and Sanjiv Khanna also sat on the Bench. The Court did not pass any judicial orders, however it requested the media to show restraint in covering the case.
